SUMMARY:Presenting CE Topic: Maintaining an Ethical Posture in a Politically Charged Climate
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, political identity has become increasingly intertwined with personal identity\, relationships\, and emotional wellbeing. As a result\, politically charged topics frequently emerge in counseling settings—whether related to elections\, public policy\, media narratives\, public health responses\, or social justice concerns. Clients may present with distress tied to political events\, conflict with family members who hold opposing views\, or feelings of fear\, anger\, or disillusionment related to sociopolitical development.\nThis workshop examines how counselors can maintain an ethical and therapeutic posture when politically charged issues arise in clinical practice. Participants will explore how political beliefs—both their own and those of their clients—may influence clinical judgment\, the therapeutic alliance\, and treatment planning. Drawing on professional ethical standards\, multicultural counseling principles\, and clinician self-awareness\, the session will consider how counselors can avoid value imposition while still engaging client concerns in meaningful and therapeutically productive ways. \nParticipants will be introduced to a structured framework for navigating politically charged discussions in counseling sessions while maintaining fidelity to ethical practice\, respect for client autonomy\, and the preservation of the therapeutic relationship. Case examples and guided reflection will assist clinicians in developing practical strategies for responding to political diversity in counseling contexts. \nLearning Objectives \nBy the end of this workshop\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify ways political beliefs and sociopolitical identities may influence client functioning\, counselor perceptions\, and the therapeutic relationship.\nDescribe relevant ethical principles and professional standards that guide counselor responses when politically charged issues arise in clinical practice.\nRecognize potential ethical risks\, including value imposition\, countertransference\, and boundary concerns\, when political differences emerge between counselors and clients.\nExplain ethical decision-making strategies that support therapeutic neutrality while honoring client autonomy.\nApply a structured clinical framework for engaging politically charged topics in counseling while maintaining ethical integrity and the therapeutic alliance.\n\nFeaturing Returning Presenter: \nAndrew J. Graham\, PhD\, LMHC\, LMFT is Associate Professor of Counselor Education at Asbury Theological Seminary and a licensed clinician in both mental health counseling and marriage and family therapy. He has more than two decades of clinical and teaching experience at the intersection of counseling\, theology\, and cultural formation. Dr. Graham’s scholarship and training focus on faith integration\, ethical practice\, and counselor development. He regularly presents at national and international conferences on topics related to spirituality in clinical practice\, crises of faith\, and ethical care within faith-based contexts. \nView or Download flyer \n$85.00\nIncludes 3 CE Hours Certificate of Attendance \nRegistration Link

SUMMARY:Auction for disaster relief includes Ed Poling's kayaks
DESCRIPTION:Many of you knew Ed Poling – and what some of you may have known is that in addition to his passion for hiking and for HARC\, he loved kayaking and the cause of Brethren Disaster Ministries as well. \nNow\, Ed’s widow\, Marge\, has donated two of Ed’s favorite kayaks and their newest loading equipment to be sold this coming Saturday\, May 2\, at the Mid-Atlantic District Church of the Brethren’s big auction day fundraiser in Westminster\, Md.\, to benefit its disaster response ministry! \nBrethren Disaster Ministries sends teams of childcare volunteers\, when called upon by the American Red Cross to help survivors after tornadoes\, wildfires and other natural disasters\, as well as teams of other skilled volunteers to help disaster survivors\, of any faith\, rebuild their homes. Money raised at the auction goes to support this work with tools and specialized trailers\, as well as to support global churches and partners in disaster areas overseas. \nWhat’s to be sold of Ed’s includes: \nAcadia Perception kayak… green\, single-seater\, with paddle… 12’4″ long \nZirconia liquidlogic kayak… blue\, tandem (two-seater)\, with paddle… about 14′ long \nTOOENJOY Elevating Roof Rack 302… You can mount this onto a car- or truck-top roof rack system and\, as the manufacturer says\, “effortlessly raise and lower kayaks\, canoes\, bicycles\, snowboards\, stand-up paddleboards\, ladders\, cargo boxes and more”\, without straining your back. These two elevating roof racks were used in a pair to tote two kayaks\, but the manufacturer shows that just one can be used if you’re taking only one kayak. Ed’s have been kept indoors and are only a few years old. \nYakima LongArm truck bed extender… Attaching to your truck hitch\, this strong but light-weight t-shaped bar can make your truck bed up to four feet longer for carrying one or two kayaks\, or other long cargo. This equipment is being sold with an added extender so that when the LongArm is pivoted and locked into a vertical position\, your cargo may also be supported by your cab’s rooftop rack system. Purchased new in 2022\, this Yakima bed extender has been kept inside a garage. \nTwo-wheeled kayak carrier… By placing one end of your kayak atop this and using a strap (not included) to cinch it tight\, you can pick up the kayak’s other end… and off\, you go to pull it to a lake and back again\, rather than having to bear all that weight yourself. \nTo see Ed’s kayaks and equipment\, as well as the fundraiser’s other attractions including sales of plants and foods\, plus auction of many items including quilts\, tools\, resort stays\, antiques and even a new auction of toys\, dolls\, etc.\, in which only children may bid… look at the fundraiser’s big booklet.

SUMMARY:HARC Meeting - What Does it Mean to Love Your Neighbor?
DESCRIPTION:How do we love our neighbors? \nMost of the world’s religions hold to the idea of loving our neighbors. What does this mean to you? And how do you and your faith community live out this ideal? This meeting is an opportunity to share our teachings\, practical application and experiences with one another. We’ll also come prepared with some community resources for practical help for people in need. Some things to consider before you come: \n\nWhat does your faith tradition say about loving your neighbor?\nWho is your neighbor?\nWhat are some small or large things you do in your own faith community to “love your neighbors”?\nWhat service projects does your house of worship offer or engage in?\nWhat’s going on in the community that could provide opportunities for service?\n\nThank you to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for hosting us and providing lunch. A free-will offering basket will be available for contributions toward the meal. Please RSVP by Friday\, April 17 at noon so we can provide our hosts with an accurate count for seating and lunch.
