SUMMARY:Diwali Lunch and Learn
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Ajay Bhandari \nDiwali is India’s biggest and most important festival of the year celebrated by Hindus\, Sikhs\, Jains\, and some Buddhists. It began as a celebration associated with the final harvest before the winter\, in which people seek divine blessings. The festival gets its name from the row (avali) of clay lamps (diya or deepa)  that Indians light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects us from spiritual darkness. SUMMARY:HARC Meeting: "Beyond Diversity" viewing and discussion
DESCRIPTION:For the November HARC meeting\, we will view the Barna Group’s “Beyond Diversity” 3 short videos\, exploring diversity and the Church\, followed by small group discussions after each video.  The purpose is to get a better understanding of the  latest opportunities and challenges impacting racial justice in the faith community.  We also hope to provide you tools and opportunities for engagement in this issue to take back to your congregation. \nThanks to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church for hosting the meeting in their newly renovated building.  Parking is available in the lot across the street from the church. \nThis will NOT be a lunch meeting\, so please eat before you come.  Note the time shift to 1:00 to allow for time for you to eat prior to the meeting.  Masks are required.  We anticipate this being a two hour meeting to allow for ample discussion time.  The meeting will not be recorded due to personal sharing in the discussions.  Please RSVP to let us know if you plan to attend: \n \n————————————————- \nHARC meetings are typically held on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 12:30 pm\, except July and August\, with an occasional evening meeting. When meeting in-person\, the location typically rotates among different houses of faith\, giving each member congregation an opportunity to host. If in-person meetings are deemed unsafe for our members\, they are held on Zoom.

SUMMARY:Welcoming the Wisdom of Autumn: A Labyrinth Walk
DESCRIPTION:As autumn more fully layers around us\, we’ll walk the labyrinth and explore the wisdom the natural world offers us in these liminal times.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nOn this day\, as we shift from daylight savings time and evening greets us earlier\, we sense the change of seasons more sharply. Autumn speaks to us of change. Those last bountiful flowers\, goldenrod and aster\, give way to seeds for winter birds. Maple and dogwood dim their bright leaves while oak clings to a robe of brown. Critters employ their enegies collecting food\, making the most of this abundant mast year of acorns and walnuts. Earth prepares our local landscape for the coming of winter and a time of rest. \nThrough the ages\, this liminal time has marked celebration and commeration. Samhain\, a holiday associated with harvesting and preparation for winter in the Celtic tradition continues today for many people. Early Christian tradition reframed these days as All Hallow’ Eve and All Saints’ Day. As we recall the teachings of our own past traditions\, we’ll also look to the living world around us to garner wisdom for these days. \nWeather permitting we’ll meet at the labyrinth and engage this ancient walking practice to quiet our minds and open our hearts. \nWe’ll start at 3:00pm – Eastern STANDARD Time – but come a little early to sign in\, set up your chair and settle in. After introductions to each other and the theme\, we’ll move into 40 minutes of silence where you’ll be invited to walk the labyrinth or wander on your own along the trails through the trees. Of course you may remain seated in silence if you so choose. After the time of silence\, we’ll come back together to share before we complete our gathering. \nBring your lawn chair\, reusable water bottle\, and your journal if you choose. Please wear your masks while coming and going. There is no charge for Church of the Wild; however we will accept donations to pay for the space at Shepherd’s Spring so remember to bring cash if you wish to contribute. \nRegister here (free) \nChurch of the Wild ~ Two Rivers is an always forming community of like-hearted souls\, meeting in the midst of and drawing inspiration from the beauty of the living earth. Our intent is to deepen our connection to the Holy by being more fully present\, open and available in each moment. We learn from the earth and trees\, the waters and sky\, and from all living beings\, human and non-human. \nYou are welcome! We welcome anyone who seeks to deepen their spirituality through time in nature. Whatever your religious tradition\, or if you have none\, Christian or otherwise\, no matter your gender identity or sexual orientation\, you are welcome here.

SUMMARY:Breaking the Cycle
DESCRIPTION:Featuring: \nTemple Grandin\, Ph.D. \nTemple (Colorado) is a professor\, best-selling author\, animal behaviorist\, and autism self-advocate in top demand as an international speaker. An extraordinary inspiration for autistic children and their parents\, she is the subject of the Emmy and Golden Globe winning HBO film\, Temple Grandin\, and was also one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people. She didn’t talk until she was three-and-a-half years old\, communicating her frustration instead by screaming\, peeping\, and humming. In 1950\, she was diagnosed with autism and her parents were told she should be institutionalized. She recounts “groping her way from the far side of darkness” in her book Emergence: Labeled Autistic\, a book that stunned the world because until its publication\, most professionals and parents assumed that an autism diagnosis was virtually a death sentence to achievement or productivity in life. \nArun Gandhi \nArun (New York) is the grandson of India’s legendary leader\, Mohandas K. “Mahatma” Gandhi. Growing up under the discriminatory apartheid laws and racism of South Africa\, Arun sought eye-for-an-eye justice. However\, he learned from his parents and grandparents that justice does not mean revenge\, it means transforming the opponent through love and compassion. After moving in with his Grandfather\, he was taught to understand nonviolence through first understanding violence. Through daily lessons from his grandfather Arun says he learnt to understand the nature and origins of violence. The very first lesson Arun received from his grandfather was to understand that anger is good. The real potential with anger is to respond by channeling this powerful energy to motivate ourselves toward positive and constructive action. Arun Gandhi has been sharing the Gift of Anger and other lessons from his grandfather all around the world for over 30 years. He is the founder and was a director of the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence and Founding President of the Gandhi Worldwide Education Institute. His most recent book “The Gift of Anger and Other Lessons from My Grandfather” is now an international bestseller. \nSue Klebold \nSue (Colorado) is the mother of Dylan Klebold\, one of the two gunmen responsible for the Columbine High School shootings of April 20\, 1999 in Littleton\, Colorado. In the aftermath of the tragedy\, Ms. Klebold remained out of the public eye while struggling with devastating grief and humiliation. Her search for understanding would span over fifteen years during which she volunteered for suicide prevention organizations\, questioned experts\, talked with fellow survivors of loss\, and examined the crucial intersection between mental health problems and violence. As a result of her exploration\, Sue emerged a passionate advocate\, dedicated to the advancement of mental health awareness and intervention. \n\nFor tickets please visit:  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/breaking-the-cycle-tickets-87801858723 \nGroup rates are available when registering 10 or more individuals!  Contact Samantha Barrett at 240-513-6370 or sbarrett@sanmarhope.org \n
