SUMMARY:HARC Meeting - The opioid/addictions epidemic: current challenges and the role of the faith community
DESCRIPTION:In September Washington County “goes purple” to raise awareness of the opioid/addictions epidemic and foster action to support those in crisis and prevent others from this terrible disease.  At our September HARC meeting\, we will hear from: \nClarence Horst\, Celebration Ministries and Celebrate Recovery\n \n\nLaura Sheffield-Bishop\, Social Work Supervisor\, Washington County Health Department & Kelly Marquart\, Certified Peer Recovery Specialist\, Washington County Health Department \n\nThis program will focus on how the faith community can support people who are in recovery or struggling with addiction.  We will also hear current Washington County data and learn helpful tips for how to handle the challenges of those in or around our churches who are in the throes of addiction.  Lay leaders are encouraged to attend as well as clergy.  Community members are also welcome. \n\nFollowing the main meeting\, a smaller group discussion will be held to do a deeper dive into challenges our houses of worship are facing and work together to find solutions.  Jeannie Asbury\, Executive Director of Reach of Washington County\, will join in this discussion with us. \nThanks to Christ’s Reformed Church for hosting this meeting.  Registration is required so we can space the room accordingly.  Masking is also required per current CDC guidelines.  Please note that if registration is higher than expected or CDC guidelines change\, this meeting may be moved to an outdoor location. \n \nAbout our speakers \nClarence Horst is an ordained minister.  He serves as the president of Celebration Ministries and together he and his wife\, Kathy Horst\, serve as ministry leaders of Celebrate Recovery Hagerstown. Clarence also serves on the Board of Directors for the Hagerstown Rescue Mission\, Reach of Washington County\, and numerous other community organizations.  Clarence also serves on the Maryland Comptrollers Business Advisory Council and is the owner of Coldwell Banker Innovations and the owner of Hagerstown Builders\, a custom home construction company which employs men in recovery.  Learn more \n\nLaura Sheffield\, LCSW-C is the Social Work Supervisor for the Washington County Health Department\, Division of Behavioral Health Services.   She is co-leader of Recovery Oriented Systems of Care (ROSC) for Washington County.  ROSC is an initiative that provides an infrastructure for a supportive network of formal and informal services that will help mobilize long term recovery for those impacted by behavioral health. Traditionally\, individuals seeking behavioral health services tend to go through the “wrong door” in accessing care and opportunities are missed in providing information\, support\, and referrals individuals are seeking. ROSC embraces the “No Wrong Door Policy” that we are striving to implement in our community; while\, bridging the gap/relationship with those who are a part of the behavioral health system. \nKelly Marquart is a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist for the Washington County Health Department and a co-leader of ROSC.  Peer recovery support embraces connections between people who share similar experiences of being diagnosed with a mental health disorder\, substance use disorder\, or both. This mutuality called “peerness” between the Peer Recovery Specialist and a person in or seeking recovery promotes self-determination\, creative strategies for self-empowerment\, inspiration\, hope\, and taking concrete steps toward building a fulfilling life.\n——————————————————– \nHARC meetings are typically held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 12:30 pm\, except July and August\, with an occasional evening meeting. When meeting in-person\, the location typically rotates among different houses of faith\, giving each member congregation an opportunity to host.  If in-person meetings are deemed unsafe for our members\, they are held on Zoom.

SUMMARY:Annual Dunker Church Remembrance Service
DESCRIPTION:The 51st Annual Dunker Church service will be held this Sunday\, September 19 at 3:00 pm on the Antietam Battlefield. Since 1970 an annual remembrance worship service has been held at the Dunker Meetinghouse on the Sunday closest to the anniversary date of the 1862 Battle of Antietam. Those who worshipped there were opposed to participation in war and the institution of slavery. This service is to keep alive the witness for peace in the midst of the bloodiest single-day battle in American history. The simple service will be in the style of early Dunkers who worshiped there regularly. Some will be wearing early Dunker attire. The speaker will be Rev. Prue Yelinek\, a retired Church of the Brethren minister from Greencastle\, on the theme\, “More Than We Can Imagine.” She has done research on her Dunker ancestors in the Valley of Virginia during the Civil War who took different sides. How they dealt with this conflict in their family may be instructive today with our current political divisions. Due to COVID restrictions\, the service will be held out-doors\, adjacent to the Dunker Meetinghouse. Please bring a folding chair or blanket for seating. For more information\, contact Ed Poling at 301-766-9005 or elpoling1@gmail.com. \n

DESCRIPTION:Featuring: \nTemple Grandin\, Ph.D. \nTemple (Colorado) is a professor\, best-selling author\, animal behaviorist\, and autism self-advocate in top demand as an international speaker. An extraordinary inspiration for autistic children and their parents\, she is the subject of the Emmy and Golden Globe winning HBO film\, Temple Grandin\, and was also one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people. She didn’t talk until she was three-and-a-half years old\, communicating her frustration instead by screaming\, peeping\, and humming. In 1950\, she was diagnosed with autism and her parents were told she should be institutionalized. She recounts “groping her way from the far side of darkness” in her book Emergence: Labeled Autistic\, a book that stunned the world because until its publication\, most professionals and parents assumed that an autism diagnosis was virtually a death sentence to achievement or productivity in life. \nArun Gandhi \nArun (New York) is the grandson of India’s legendary leader\, Mohandas K. “Mahatma” Gandhi. Growing up under the discriminatory apartheid laws and racism of South Africa\, Arun sought eye-for-an-eye justice. However\, he learned from his parents and grandparents that justice does not mean revenge\, it means transforming the opponent through love and compassion. After moving in with his Grandfather\, he was taught to understand nonviolence through first understanding violence. Through daily lessons from his grandfather Arun says he learnt to understand the nature and origins of violence. The very first lesson Arun received from his grandfather was to understand that anger is good. The real potential with anger is to respond by channeling this powerful energy to motivate ourselves toward positive and constructive action. Arun Gandhi has been sharing the Gift of Anger and other lessons from his grandfather all around the world for over 30 years. He is the founder and was a director of the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence and Founding President of the Gandhi Worldwide Education Institute. His most recent book “The Gift of Anger and Other Lessons from My Grandfather” is now an international bestseller. \nSue Klebold \nSue (Colorado) is the mother of Dylan Klebold\, one of the two gunmen responsible for the Columbine High School shootings of April 20\, 1999 in Littleton\, Colorado. In the aftermath of the tragedy\, Ms. Klebold remained out of the public eye while struggling with devastating grief and humiliation. Her search for understanding would span over fifteen years during which she volunteered for suicide prevention organizations\, questioned experts\, talked with fellow survivors of loss\, and examined the crucial intersection between mental health problems and violence. As a result of her exploration\, Sue emerged a passionate advocate\, dedicated to the advancement of mental health awareness and intervention. \n\nFor tickets please visit:  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/breaking-the-cycle-tickets-87801858723 \nGroup rates are available when registering 10 or more individuals!  Contact Samantha Barrett at 240-513-6370 or sbarrett@sanmarhope.org \n
