DESCRIPTION:Looking back: Church Women United celebrated Human Rights Day with a dinner and program on Friday\, September 12\, 2025 at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. The theme was “Help Others at all Times.” A total of 45 women and men attended the event representing 15 area churches and 10 denominations. The guest speaker was Kathy Powderly who shared about the ministry of the Hagerstown Area Religious Council. (HARC) 22 health kits were collected for distribution to homeless children in Washington County. An offering of $735 was collected for HARC. Later the CWU Executive Council decided to increase the donation to HARC to $1000! What a blessing this event was for those in attendance and to those who will benefit from their generosity! Thank you for attending in September.\nLooking ahead: Be a part of this exciting\, inspirational group of Christian women. Join us as CWU celebrates World Community Day at noon on Friday\, November 7. The lunch and program takes place at Zion Baptist Church. The theme is “Be Kind at All Times” based on Ephesians 4:32. In addition to John Sabine and the Saint John’s Parish Choir\, the Rev. Dr. Don Saliers will join them to comment on the hymns they are singing and to comment on what the Council of Nicaea did and how it still affects the Church today. 2025 marks the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea. \nDon E. Saliers (born 1937)\, ordained in the United Methodist Church\, is an American pianist\, organist\, poet\, composer\, and theologian specializing in homiletics and liturgics. Saliers joined the Emory University faculty in 1974. He was the William R. Cannon Distinguished Professor of Theology and Worship at the Candler School of Theology of Emory University in Atlanta\, Georgia. In addition to teaching theology and worship\, he directed the Master of Sacred Music program there. He has also taught at Notre Dame\, St. John’s University\, Vancouver School of Theology\, and Boston College. Although he retired from Candler in 2007\, Dr. Saliers returned to Candler as Theologian-in-Residence in 2015.Among the twenty-four books Saliers has written\, are several on the relationship between theology and worship practices. He also co-authored A Song to Sing\, a Life to Live with his daughter Emily Saliers\, a member of the folk-rock music duo Indigo Girls. Saliers has served as president of the North American Academy of Liturgy and the Society for the Study of Christian Spirituality and has been a chaplain to the American Guild of Organists.
