SUMMARY:HARC Monthly Meeting: Racial Bias
DESCRIPTION:HARC’s June meeting will focus on racial bias.  We will hear about personal experiences with bias here and now in Washington County\, leading into small group discussions about bias. Come with an open mind and heart\, ready to learn and share!  We will also have a time of fellowship and lunch.  Please bring your own lunch. \nWe will meet in person at Church of Christ at Hagerstown’s outdoor pavilion.  Please RSVP so we have an idea of how many people to expect and can space tables accordingly. \nThis meeting will not be streamed to Facebook due to the sensitive nature of the topic and personal sharing. \n—————————– \nHARC meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 12:30 pm\, except July and August\, with an occasional evening meeting. When meeting in-person\, the location typically rotates among different houses of faith\, giving each member congregation an opportunity to host. If in-person meetings are deemed unsafe for our members\, they are held on Zoom.

SUMMARY:See No Stranger: a Memoir & Manifesto of Revolutionary Love
DESCRIPTION:See No Stranger: a Memoir & Manifesto of Revolutionary Love by Valarie Kaur\nJoin Unity of Hagerstown for a lively discussion on See No Stranger: a Memoir & Manifesto of Revolutionary Love by Valarie Kaur\, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKMEqF0OVxs) beginning July 13\, 7 p.m. via Zoom. Contact Sandy Boyer for more info- sandy.boyer@gmail.com \nKaur takes readers through her own journey into a racial\, joyful practice that extends in three directions: to others\, to our opponents\, and to ourselves. It enjoins us to see no stranger but instead look at others and say You are a part of me I do not yet know. Starting at that place of wonder\, the world begins to change: it is a practice that can transform a relationship\, a community\, a culture\, even a nation. \nKaur is a civil rights activist\, lawyer\, filmmaker\, innovator and founder of the Revolutionary Love Project. She has won national acclaim for her work in social justice on issues ranging from hate crime to digital freedom. Her speeches have reached millions worldwide and inspired a movement to reclaim love as a force for justice. A daughter of Sikh farmers in California\, she earned degrees from Stanford University\, Harvard Divinity School and Yale Law School. (from the jacket of See No Stranger)

SUMMARY:HARC Meeting - The opioid/addictions epidemic: current challenges and the role of the faith community
DESCRIPTION:In September Washington County “goes purple” to raise awareness of the opioid/addictions epidemic and foster action to support those in crisis and prevent others from this terrible disease.  At our September HARC meeting\, we will hear from: \nClarence Horst\, Celebration Ministries and Celebrate Recovery\n \n\nLaura Sheffield-Bishop\, Social Work Supervisor\, Washington County Health Department & Kelly Marquart\, Certified Peer Recovery Specialist\, Washington County Health Department \n\nThis program will focus on how the faith community can support people who are in recovery or struggling with addiction.  We will also hear current Washington County data and learn helpful tips for how to handle the challenges of those in or around our churches who are in the throes of addiction.  Lay leaders are encouraged to attend as well as clergy.  Community members are also welcome. \n\nFollowing the main meeting\, a smaller group discussion will be held to do a deeper dive into challenges our houses of worship are facing and work together to find solutions.  Jeannie Asbury\, Executive Director of Reach of Washington County\, will join in this discussion with us. \nThanks to Christ’s Reformed Church for hosting this meeting.  Registration is required so we can space the room accordingly.  Masking is also required per current CDC guidelines.  Please note that if registration is higher than expected or CDC guidelines change\, this meeting may be moved to an outdoor location. \n \nAbout our speakers \nClarence Horst is an ordained minister.  He serves as the president of Celebration Ministries and together he and his wife\, Kathy Horst\, serve as ministry leaders of Celebrate Recovery Hagerstown. Clarence also serves on the Board of Directors for the Hagerstown Rescue Mission\, Reach of Washington County\, and numerous other community organizations.  Clarence also serves on the Maryland Comptrollers Business Advisory Council and is the owner of Coldwell Banker Innovations and the owner of Hagerstown Builders\, a custom home construction company which employs men in recovery.  Learn more \n\nLaura Sheffield\, LCSW-C is the Social Work Supervisor for the Washington County Health Department\, Division of Behavioral Health Services.   She is co-leader of Recovery Oriented Systems of Care (ROSC) for Washington County.  ROSC is an initiative that provides an infrastructure for a supportive network of formal and informal services that will help mobilize long term recovery for those impacted by behavioral health. Traditionally\, individuals seeking behavioral health services tend to go through the “wrong door” in accessing care and opportunities are missed in providing information\, support\, and referrals individuals are seeking. ROSC embraces the “No Wrong Door Policy” that we are striving to implement in our community; while\, bridging the gap/relationship with those who are a part of the behavioral health system. \nKelly Marquart is a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist for the Washington County Health Department and a co-leader of ROSC.  Peer recovery support embraces connections between people who share similar experiences of being diagnosed with a mental health disorder\, substance use disorder\, or both. This mutuality called “peerness” between the Peer Recovery Specialist and a person in or seeking recovery promotes self-determination\, creative strategies for self-empowerment\, inspiration\, hope\, and taking concrete steps toward building a fulfilling life.\n——————————————————– \nHARC meetings are typically held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 12:30 pm\, except July and August\, with an occasional evening meeting. When meeting in-person\, the location typically rotates among different houses of faith\, giving each member congregation an opportunity to host.  If in-person meetings are deemed unsafe for our members\, they are held on Zoom.

SUMMARY:Annual Dunker Church Remembrance Service
DESCRIPTION:The 51st Annual Dunker Church service will be held this Sunday\, September 19 at 3:00 pm on the Antietam Battlefield. Since 1970 an annual remembrance worship service has been held at the Dunker Meetinghouse on the Sunday closest to the anniversary date of the 1862 Battle of Antietam. Those who worshipped there were opposed to participation in war and the institution of slavery. This service is to keep alive the witness for peace in the midst of the bloodiest single-day battle in American history. The simple service will be in the style of early Dunkers who worshiped there regularly. Some will be wearing early Dunker attire. The speaker will be Rev. Prue Yelinek\, a retired Church of the Brethren minister from Greencastle\, on the theme\, “More Than We Can Imagine.” She has done research on her Dunker ancestors in the Valley of Virginia during the Civil War who took different sides. How they dealt with this conflict in their family may be instructive today with our current political divisions. Due to COVID restrictions\, the service will be held out-doors\, adjacent to the Dunker Meetinghouse. Please bring a folding chair or blanket for seating. For more information\, contact Ed Poling at 301-766-9005 or elpoling1@gmail.com. \n
