SUMMARY:HARC Meeting: Networking and Fellowship
DESCRIPTION:We spend most of our monthly HARC meetings learning about important programs and initiatives in our community and finding ways the faith community can “plug in” to help\, or take information back to our houses of faith and organizations. As valuable as these programs are\, they usually leave little time for us to really get to know one another and connect on a deeper level. \nSo for our March meeting\, we decided it was time to simply share a meal together\, and enjoy fellowship among faith leaders\, affiliate leaders\, and others in our network. We hope you’ll join us to catch up with old friends and make new ones! \nJoin us for lunch\, fellowship\, and sharing of our host’s faith tradition. Thank you to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church for hosting and providing our meal.  Contributions toward the meal can be made via a free-will offering basket.   RSVP requested by Friday\, March 8 at noon so we can get a count for lunch. \n \n————————————————————————– \nHARC meetings are typically held on the 2nd Tuesday of every month for lunch\, except July and August\, with an occasional evening meeting.  When meeting in-person\, the location typically rotates among different houses of faith\, giving different congregations and organizations an opportunity to host.  Some meetings will be recorded for later viewing\, as we are able and the subject allows.

Following a multi-year transition process 2013-2016\, all residential programs and the San Mar School closed when the organization’s mission statement changed to “Cultivating hope and well-being in children\, families and communities.” The organization committed to becoming child centered\, family focused and community engaged and focused on upstream efforts. Their work through Bester Community of Hope\, the Jack E. Barr Center for Well-Being\, Treatment Foster Care\, and their collaborations with many other organizations all based in trauma informed practices has led Washington County in becoming a healing community. \nJoin us for lunch and fellowship.  Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren will provide the meal and share about their faith tradition.  Contributions toward the meal can be made via a free-will offering basket.  RSVP requested by Friday\, December 8 at noon so we can get a count for lunch.

SUMMARY:HARC Meeting: The Rise in Antisemitism
DESCRIPTION:2021 set a new high for antisemitic incidents\, with the coronavirus pandemic fueling a worldwide rise in antisemitism\, according to a report of the U.S.-based Anti-Defamation League.  While these incidents decreased in 2022 in other countries\, the ADL found that the number of antisemitic incidents in the U.S. increased by more than 35 percent in the past year\, from 2\,721 in 2021 to 3\,697 in 2022. \nIn light of this data and a concern for our Jewish brothers and sisters\, HARC will welcome a guest speaker (via Zoom) from the Anti-Defamation League for our May program to talk about the rise in antisemitism and antisemitic hate crimes\, what’s causing it\, and what people of faith can do to prevent antisemitism and other forms of hate based on faith. We will also have a time of lament and showing of solidarity with our Jewish friends in Washington County. \nWe suspect that hate crimes have increased for other groups as well\, so while this program is specifically focused on antisemitism\, we hope the information learned will be applicable to other incidences of hate in our community and country. \nJoin us for lunch and fellowship\, followed by the program.  Lunch will be provided by our host\, Congregation B’Nai Abraham with a free-will offering basket.  RSVP requested by Friday\, May 5 at noon so we can get a count for lunch. \nParking can be found on Baltimore Street or in the Library parking lot.  A few handicap accessible spaces are available in the small lot next to the synagogue.  Entrance is from the back of the parking lot\, through the gate\, and into the fellowship room at the back of the synagogue.

SUMMARY:HARC Meeting: “Dialogue that Enlarges: Bridging ideological divides through a faith lens"
DESCRIPTION:What role does the faith community have in civic life? Can the faith community provide a good model for achieving constructive engagement across differences? \nAs part of The Season For Nonviolence\, HARC is offering this program — which is based on the “Better Arguments Project” framework — to encourage participants to think about the influence of faith and spirituality as they seek to engage in constructive discourse with those of differing views. It will also provide tools to decrease both verbal and physical violence and promote peace. \nConflict is a natural part of the human experience. HARC’s goal is to practice this framework with faith leaders so you can take the resource back to your congregations and community groups. For more information on the Better Arguments Project\, visit www.betterarguments.org. \nThank you to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church for hosting and providing the meal.  Join us for lunch and fellowship\, sharing of our host’s faith tradition\, followed by the program. RSVP requested by Friday\, February 10 at noon so we can get a count for lunch. If in-person meetings are decided to be unsafe for our members\, they will be held on Zoom.

SUMMARY:HARC Meeting: Dealing with the Lingering Effects of the Pandemic on Congregations and Faith Leaders
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \nAs the COVID-19 pandemic reaches its two-year mark\, stress and burnout is real\, and taking a toll on everyone\, including congregation members and faith leaders.  Even with infection numbers currently down\, the next variant is right around the corner.  For April’s meeting\, we are grateful to have Rev. Ron Shank\, Director of Pastoral Care with Book Lane and Jessie Davis\, licensed certified social worker-clinical with Brook Lane\, offering a special program for faith leaders and members of the faith community on how to deal with the effects of pandemic stress in their congregations and engage in self-care. \nPlease note the change from our normal 2nd Tuesday date to the 4th Tuesday\, April 26.  We plan to hold this program in person only\, and it will not be recorded to allow a safe space for sharing.  Thanks to Zion Reformed UCC for hosting.  The meeting will begin at 1:00 to allow for participants to eat before they come.  Masking is optional\, but we ask that you wear a mask if you are not vaccinated/boosted. Please RSVP your attendance. \n \nParking at Zion:  Zion has two parking lots. One is located behind the adjoining church Parsonage building (off of North Potomac Street). The entrance is located between the Parsonage and red brick neighboring building. It is the second driveway on the right after crossing Bethel Street. The second church parking lot is located in the alley behind the church with a parking area available across the alley from the church immediately behind the church. In addition to these these two lots\, there is also curbside parking on North Potomac Street \n————————————————————————– \nHARC meetings are typically held on the 2nd Tuesday of every month\, except July and August\, with an occasional evening meeting.  During COVID our meetings have typically started at 1:00 to give time for lunch prior to the meeting; when it’s safe to eat\, the start time is 12:30.  When meeting in-person\, the location typically rotates among different houses of faith\, giving each member congregation an opportunity to host.
