SUMMARY:Early American Sacred Singing - A Joyful Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In this 90-minute workshop with Dr. Stephen Marini \, we’ll learn about how our Early American ancestors arrived in our area\, what they knew about sacred singing\, and how they practiced it. We’ll give it a try ourselves\, and get good enough to sing several songs in that style from some of the earliest tune books published in our region – then we’ll congratulate ourselves!    \nWe’ll end with a Q&A about what we learned\, both musical and historical.  \nHeld in the Fellowship which can be entered from the parking lot in back. Please call or email so they know how many chairs!(301)733-2879 or office@tlchag.org \n Dr. Stephen Marini is Elisabeth Luce Moore Professor of Christian Studies in the Department of Religion and Ethics at Wellesley College\, Wellesley\, Massachusetts\, and Founder/Singing Master of Norumbega Harmony\, an internationally acclaimed performance and recording group specializing in Early American sacred music. \nDr. Marini’s joy is to explore areas where music\, religion\, and history coincide. His experiences include accompanying a church on piano\, then directing the Glee Club at Dickinson College\, where he majored in History and American Studies. Then on to the University of Chicago Divinity School as a Rockefeller Brothers Theological Fellow followed by a PhD from Harvard University in the Study of Religion. He is the author of several books\, including Radical Sects of Revolutionary Religion\, Sacred Song in America: Religion and Public Culture\, and The Cashaway Psalmody: Transatlantic Religion and Music in Colonial Carolina\, as well as many scholarly articles and book chapters. He is sought after in the U.S. and Europe as lecturer\, musician\, and consultant.  Find his biography: https://www1.wellesley.edu/religion/faculty/marini
