SUMMARY:HARC Meeting: The Rise in Antisemitism
DESCRIPTION:2021 set a new high for antisemitic incidents\, with the coronavirus pandemic fueling a worldwide rise in antisemitism\, according to a report of the U.S.-based Anti-Defamation League.  While these incidents decreased in 2022 in other countries\, the ADL found that the number of antisemitic incidents in the U.S. increased by more than 35 percent in the past year\, from 2\,721 in 2021 to 3\,697 in 2022. \nIn light of this data and a concern for our Jewish brothers and sisters\, HARC will welcome a guest speaker (via Zoom) from the Anti-Defamation League for our May program to talk about the rise in antisemitism and antisemitic hate crimes\, what’s causing it\, and what people of faith can do to prevent antisemitism and other forms of hate based on faith. We will also have a time of lament and showing of solidarity with our Jewish friends in Washington County. \nWe suspect that hate crimes have increased for other groups as well\, so while this program is specifically focused on antisemitism\, we hope the information learned will be applicable to other incidences of hate in our community and country. \nJoin us for lunch and fellowship\, followed by the program.  Lunch will be provided by our host\, Congregation B’Nai Abraham with a free-will offering basket.  RSVP requested by Friday\, May 5 at noon so we can get a count for lunch. \nParking can be found on Baltimore Street or in the Library parking lot.  A few handicap accessible spaces are available in the small lot next to the synagogue.  Entrance is from the back of the parking lot\, through the gate\, and into the fellowship room at the back of the synagogue. \n \n————————————————————————– \nHARC meetings are typically held on the 2nd Tuesday of every month for lunch\, except July and August\, with an occasional evening meeting.  When meeting in-person\, the location typically rotates among different houses of faith\, giving different congregations and organizations an opportunity to host.  Some meetings will be recorded for later viewing\, as we are able and the subject allows.

SUMMARY:Spring Choral Concert: “Ein Deutsches Requiem: A Requiem for the Living”
DESCRIPTION:Frostburg State University’s Department of Music will present the FSU Choral Artists\, under the direction of Dr. Scott Rieker\, in “Ein Deutsches Requiem: A Requiem for the Living” on Saturday\, May 6\, at 7:30 p.m. in the Pealer Recital Hall of FSU’s Woodward D. Pealer Performing Arts Center. They will be accompanied by collaborative pianists Dr. Joseph Yungen and Dr. James DeWire\, as well as soprano Francesca Aguado and baritone Gregory Scott Stuart\, voice faculty members who will join the ensemble as soloists. The concert is free and open to the public. This event will also be livestreamed; click the “Join Stream” button on this page a few minutes before the recital is scheduled to begin\, or anytime during the recital\, to view the live performance. \nFor this event\, the FSU Chamber Singers\, University Chorale and Troubadours Tenor-Bass Choir will present Johannes Brahms’ timeless masterwork\, “Ein Deutsches Requiem” (“A German Requiem”). The choirs will combine to perform the 1871 London Version of the requiem\, featuring choir and four-hand piano accompaniment. The entire concert will be presented again on Tuesday\, May 9\, at 7:30 pm\, at Bethel United Methodist Church at 21002 Twin Springs Drive in Smithsburg\, Md. \nA “human requiem” as Brahms liked to call it\, “Ein Deutsches Requiem” breaks with tradition\, using inspiration from the Protestant Bible of Luther. Brahms wrote the text himself\, giving more importance to the living. A remarkable piece of sacred music\, this work was composed soon after Brahms’ mother passed away in 1865; it is possible that he had in mind his great friend and mentor\, Robert Schumann\, whose madness and tragic death had profoundly affected the young Brahms. \nUnlike traditional requiems\, which offer prayers for the souls of the dead\, Brahms’ “German Requiem” offers comfort to the living. The music traces a journey of grief: there is sorrow\, anger and pain\, but also warmth\, brightness and calm. The texts Brahms chose for “Ein Deutsches Requiem” – passages from the Old Testament\, the Apocrypha and the New Testament – seem intended to soothe those who mourn. \nOf the seven movements\, four are set for chorus and orchestra. The other three include vocal soloists: a soprano in the fifth movement and a baritone in the third and sixth movements. \nDownload a flyer \n
